Justin Fields played one drive of the New York Jets‘ preseason opener, capping it in a familiar fashion. The former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback scrambled for a 13-yard touchdown before heading to the bench.

On a 3rd-and-5 from the Green Bay Packers’ 13-yard line, Fields caught a snap from the shotgun and was given about two and a half seconds before his blocking caved in.

Fields snuggled into the pocket, away from stunting Packers defensive tackle Kenny Clark, and pulled his arm away from a grabbing Devonte Wyatt. Having passed the line, he charted course to his right, outrunning cornerback Keisean Nixon, who missed a diving tackle try. Safety Kitan Oladapo couldn’t close in as Fields sprinted to the right front pylon.

Fields went 3 for 4 during the 10-play, 79-yard march, hitting A. Beck twice and T. Johnson once more. He was pulled in favor of former Missouri Tigers quarterback Brady Cook, an undrafted rookie.

Playing in 10 games for the Steelers last season, Fields rushed for 289 yards and five touchdowns on 62 carries. Over his four campaigns as a pro, Fields has gone for 2,509 yards and 19 scores. With the Chicago Bears in 2022, he totaled 1,143 rushing yards.

Before free agency began during the offseason, Steelers owner and president Art Rooney II said it was his “preference” to sign either Fields or Russell Wilson. Wilson took the starting job from Fields six games in last season.

Fields signed a two-year, $40 million deal with the Jets, leaving the Steelers to woo Aaron Rodgers for a few months before adding him.
