Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Tee Martin is candidate for a pair of offensive coordinator openings, according to a report by Jordan Schultz of FOX.
Both the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders requested interviews with Martin, according to Schultz. The 47-year-old former Steelers quarterback has been the quarterbacks coach of the Baltimore Ravens since 2023.
The Commanders did not hire Martin, instead choosing to promote assistant quarterbacks coach David Blough to offensive coordinator to replace Kliff Kingsbury, who was fired after a disappointing 5-12 season for Washington.
Detroit has yet to fill its vacancy, which was created when the Lions fired John Morton, who had just one season as the Detroit offensive coordinator after replacing Ben Johnson.
Martin will interview with Detroit on Monday, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. Seattle Seahawks pass game coordinator Jake Peetz also interviewed for that job, and the Lions reached out to former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Martin, 47, spent the last five seasons with the Ravens, two as wide receivers coach and three as quarterbacks coach. The status of the Baltimore staff is up in the air after the club parted ways with longtime head coach John Harbaugh.
Before that, he spent two seasons as the assistant head coach and wide receivers coach at his alma mater, Tennessee from 2019-20, seven years as wide receivers coach, passing game coordinator and offensive coordinator at USC from 2012-18, where he coached under Lane Kiffin, Ed Orgeron, Steve Sarkisian and Clay Helton.
Originally the fifth-round pick of the Steelers in the 2000 NFL Draft out of Tennessee, Martin spent two seasons with the Steelers in 2000 and 2001. As a rookie, he was the No. 3 quarterback behind Kent Graham and Kordell Stewart. In 2001, he was the No. 3 behind Stewart and Tommy Maddox. Martin appeared in one game with the Steelers, the 2001 season finale against the Cleveland Browns. He rushed one time for eight yards.
In 2002, the Steelers sent Martin to play for the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe. He led the team to a 7-3 record and first place finish, losing to the Berlin Thunder in the World Bowl.
That summer, the Steelers signed Charlie Batch as a free agent to take the No. 3 quarterback job, and Martin was released in September. He spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad in 2002 and then with the Oakland Raiders in 2003. He finished his playing career in the CFL, spending two seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Martin got into coaching immediately after his playing career, starting at Division II Morehouse in 2006 and then spending two seasons coaching high schools in the Atlanta area before catching on as quarterbacks coach at New Mexico in 2009. He moved on to spend two seasons as wide receivers coach at Kentucky, where he served under offensive coordinator Randy Sanders, who had been Martin’s offensive coordinator at Tennessee when the Volunteers won the national championship in...
