Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Michael Vick has been named as a potential head coaching candidate at his alma mater, Virginia Tech, despite just getting his coaching career started.
According to a report by Pete Nakos of On3, some Virginia Tech boosters were behind pushing for Vick to get some coaching experience, and his name could very well come up in the Hokies’ current coaching search.
Virginia Tech fired Brent Pry after an 0-3 start to the season, including a blowout home loss to Old Dominion last week. The Hokies also lost to South Carolina and Vanderbilt to start the 2025 season.
Pry, an Altoona native and former Penn State defensive coordinator, had been the head coach at Virginia Tech since 2022.
Vick, 45, is in his first season as the head coach at Norfolk State. His Spartans have started 1-2, losing to Towson and Rutgers and beating Virginia State. Terence Garvin, Vick’s former Steelers teammate, is his defensive coordinator at Norfolk State.
It’s not clear how likely that Vick would become a viable candidate at Virginia Tech after just one season of coaching experience. He has reportedly stated his interest in the position.
“Vick is something of a booster wish-cast pick,” CBS Sports’ Richard Johnson said. “It’s the feel-good ‘takes us back to a different era.’ I think there are some people who could envision Michael Vick as a candidate similar to Deion Sanders or Eddie George. You put great coordinators around him and you allow him to be the front for fundraising, etc. That’s kind of the vision there. It’s a little early to say Michael Vick would be a leading candidate. I would not put him as a leading candidate at all.”
Vick spent the 2015 season as the Steelers’ backup quarterback to Ben Roethlisberger and helped the team to a 10-6 record and a playoff berth. He played in five games and made three starts.
