Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher believes that the team should give 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers “full autonomy.” Rodgers signed a one-year contract with the Steelers earlier this year and plans to retire after the season.
Bill Cowher, 68 years old, was the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1992 to 2006, winning a Super Bowl with the team in 2005.
While appearing on The Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday, Cowher argued that the Steelers should give Aaron Rodgers complete control of the offense, which also now boasts wide receiver DK Metcalf following an offseason trade.
“Absolutely,” Cowher told Dan Patrick when asked if Rodgers should have ‘total autonomy’ of the offense.
“I don’t think there’s any question about it. And I think Aaron’s at a point where he knows you don’t want him to be throwing the ball 40 times a game at this point. You want Aaron Rodgers to be healthy going into the playoffs, and hopefully you get to the playoffs. I think in the meantime, you create a balance on your football team that you’re not just relying on his arm throughout the course of four quarters.”
Cowher’s comments could only be made by someone who has completely blacked-out the Aaron Rodgers experience over the last few seasons, as he hasn’t led a team to the playoffs since the 2021 Green Bay Packers.
Beyond his fading performance on the field, Rodgers has become something of a cultural black hole as his controversial points of views and desperation for the spotlight — appearances on Pat McAfee, Joe Rogan, other various podcasts — seem to suck all of the energy and light out of the teams he plays for (this is coming from a Jets fan, by the way).
The NFL schedule makers certainly are aware of the lingering feelings toward Aaron Rodgers in New York, as the Steelers will be opening their 2025 season with a Week 1 trip to MetLife Stadium to take on the new-look Jets under rookie head coach Aaron Glenn.
