After bouncing around between four teams over the past two seasons, former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick Terrell Edmunds signed with the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

Pete Carroll’s team was short a safety after Lonnie Johnson Jr. suffered a broken leg earlier this month.

Surprisingly, the Steelers reached to select Edmunds with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Over five seasons in Pittsburgh, he could never emerge as an impact player, notching just five interceptions beside Minkah Fitzpatrick during that time.

Edmunds’ best go-round was in 2019, when he totaled 105 tackles and three passes defended.

Edmunds signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023, playing seven games before being shipped to the Tennessee Titans. The Steelers replaced him with a mix of Keanu Neal and Damontae Kazee during that year.

Last season, Edmunds was a Week 1 practice squad elevation for the Jacksonville Jaguars, then returned to the Steelers, playing in five games and registering five tackles.

The Steelers have completely remade their safety room, trading Fitzpatrick to the Miami Dolphins in June. Juan Thornhill and Chuck Clark are new additions at the position, while DeShon Elliott earned himself a contract extension with the presence he provided last season.

Thornhill has been outspoken about his belief in what the Steelers’ defense can accomplish this season.

“Literally, we’ve got pieces everywhere,” Thornhill said. “Look at the roster, look at who we have. It’s incredible. Literally, I don’t feel like there’s a weakness on the defense. If you look at most teams, you know you’ve got the fish out there, the one or two people that’s like, ‘Eh, I’m not sure.’

“But, with us, we’ve got a front that’s unbelievable, linebackers that’s great and DBs that can cover anyone.”
