In 2018, Chicago Bears kicker Cody Parkey ensured that fans would never forget his name. Unfortunately, he did so by creating one of the most infamous moments not just in franchise history, but in NFL history.
Parkey and the Bears entered the players with a 12-4 record and as the NFC North champions. For their troubles, they earned a first-round game against the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, who went 9-7 to secure a Wild Card bid.
With just under a minute to go in a low-scoring contest, the Eagles scored a touchdown to go ahead 16-15. Chicago then marched down the field, thanks to two big catches by Allen Robinson, to set up Parkey for an attempt at a game-winning 43-yard field goal.

Parkey’s field goal attempt clanged not only off the left post, but then down off the crossbar…a double doink. And with that, the Bears’ season was over.
As it turns out, Philadelphia coach Doug Pederson had a secret weapon up his sleeve, and he played it perfectly.

On a recent episode of Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take” podcast, Pederson let the hosts in on a secret. Pederson said that earlier in the week, Eagles special teams coach Dave Fipp came to him and gave him a tip about Parkey.
Apparently, Fipp discovered that Parkey’s career field goal percentage dropped nearly 25 percent after an opposing coach called a timeout to ice him.
So rather than use his one remaining timeout earlier in the drive to try and save time for his offense, Pederson held onto it. He then called the timeout just as Parkey lined up to attempt the kick.
Lo and behold, the trick worked. Parkey missed the kick after the timeout, and the rest is history.
