The New England Patriots made a couple of intriguing moves when trimming their roster down to 53 players on Tuesday. While the team’s decision to release offensive lineman Cole Strange was perhaps its most surprising, they also released another former starter on their o-line in Demontrey Jacobs.
After breaking into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Denver Broncos in 2023, the Patriots claimed Jacobs last season, and he ended up being thrust into action in 15 games, 13 of which were starts, due to the state of the team’s offensive line.
Jacobs largely held his own, but with Will Campbell and Morgan Moses being brought to town this offseason to upgrade the tackle spots, it was clear he was competing for a backup job on the team. Ultimately, he missed out on a roster spot, with Marcus Bryant, Caedan Wallace and Vederian Lowe being kept as the team’s depth options at tackle.
Given his experience as a starter, though, it seemed likely that Jacobs would find a new home in the NFL pretty quickly. Sure enough, reports have indicated that he has latched on with the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad after getting cut by the Pats.
“Offensive tackle Demontrey Jacobs is signing with the Cardinals practice squad, per source,” Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported. “Jacobs started 13 games at right tackle for New England last year.”
While he’s set to begin his tenure in Arizona on the practice squad, it would not be a surprise to see Jacobs on the field soon, whether it be with the Cardinals or if he gets signed to another team’s active roster.
New England, meanwhile, will roll into the 2025 campaign with a new-look offensive line. Losing Jacobs’ starting experience hurts, but the team feels good about their current group, and time will tell whether or not their o-line has improved from last season.
