New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is coming off of a near MVP season. Some around the league already believe he is amongst the upper echelon of quarterbacks.
Brian Hoyer of Sirius XM NFL Radio has Maye as his second-best quarterback in the league, behind just Matthew Stafford. He is followed by Buffalo Bills star Josh Allen at three and Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas Chiefs at four while Baltimore Ravens QB and Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals are tied for fifth.
Hoyer obviously took into account Maye’s 2025 performance. But his work during the offseason is what vaulted him to the second spot, via Mike Reiss of ESPN.
“The reason I go with Drake second is not only what he did last year, but what I’m hearing coming out of Patriots camp right now,” Hoyer said. “A.J. Brown was talking about Drake taking over the meeting room. I was in a room with a guy who did that every day — Tom Brady — and when a quarterback takes ownership like that it can take it to the next level.”
During that 2025 campaign, Maye completed 72% of his passes with 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He added another 450 yards and four touchdowns on the ground as the Patriots made a run to the Super Bowl.
Entering the 2026 season, New England has been diligently building around Maye. They used their first-round pick on offensive lineman Caleb Lomu. Then, the Patriots signed wide receiver Romeo Doubs in free agency before trading for fellow receiver A.J. Brown. All the pieces are in place for continued Maye success.
The expectations on his shoulders are now sure to be lofty. But Hoyer is at least confident Maye can live up to them.
