San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Tuesday that quarterback Mac Jones will miss the team’s preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday due to a sprained knee.

The former New England Patriots signal-caller suffered the injury during San Francisco’s preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders last Saturday.

Shanahan added that Jones should be good to go as Brock Purdy’s backup in Week 1.

The 26-year-old is entering his first season in the Bay Area after signing a two-year, $8.4 million contract with the 49ers in March.

Jones has seen his overall production drop in every season since his 2021 Pro Bowl rookie campaign with the Patriots. New England selected Jones with the 15th overall pick in that year’s draft and he helped lead the Patriots that season to their most recent playoff berth.

After losing his starting job during the 2023 campaign, Jones was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars in March 2024 for a sixth-round pick (which turned into quarterback Joe Milton). Jones finished last season with 1,672 passing yards, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions across 10 games, seven of which he started in place of an injured Trevor Lawrence.
