San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones had one of the best games of his career in Week 5, leading his team to a 26-23 overtime upset vs. the Los Angeles Rams on “Thursday Night Football.”
The former New England Patriots signal-caller finished the victory 33-for-49 with 342 passing yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions and joined a pair of Pro Football Hall of Fame legendary quarterbacks in an exclusive club in the process.
“#49ers QBs to win 3 straight starts while throwing more than 35 passes in all 3 games: Mac Jones 2025 Steve Young 1995 Joe Montana 1990,” Associated Press NFL writer Josh Dubow posted on Bluesky.
The Patriots selected Jones with the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and he helped lead New England that season to their most recent playoff berth while earning the lone Pro Bowl honor of his career.
After losing his starting job during the 2023 campaign, Jones was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars in March 2024 for a sixth-round pick (which turned into quarterback Joe Milton). Jones finished last season with 1,672 passing yards, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions across 10 games, seven of which he started in place of an injured Trevor Lawrence.
He inked a two-year, $8.4 million contract with the Niners in March and took over as the team’s starter in Week 2 after Brock Purdy went down with an injury.
Jones led San Francisco to back-to-back wins before Purdy returned in Week 4.
The Alabama product was called upon again on Thursday as Purdy deals with a toe injury.
The Niners are now 3-0 under Jones after he went over 300 passing yards on Thursday night for the first time since Week 1 of the 2023 campaign while posting his highest single-game mark since Thanksgiving of 2022.
