Byron Cowart was carted off the field with an apparent injury at the New York Jets training camp session on Tuesday, according to a report by Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper.
The former New England Patriots defensive tackle signed with the Jets in March.
The Patriots selected Cowart in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft and he spent the first two seasons of his career with the team.
Cowart played just five games and 43 defensive snaps during the 2019 campaign, while recording two tackles. He started and played 14 contests with New England in 2020, registering career highs in defensive snaps (419) and tackles (27), while posting three quarterback hits, three tackles for loss, one pass defended and one sack as well.
Cowart was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list at the start of the 2021 season and didn’t play that year. The 29-year-old Cowart was waived by the Patriots in July 2022 and claimed by the Indianapolis Colts.
The Maryland product played a career-high 17 games with the Colts in 2022 and made 12 tackles, before being signed and released by multiple teams in 2023 and ultimately not appearing in any contests. Cowart had a career year with the Chicago Bears in 2024, posting high marks in tackles for loss (five), quarterback hits (four) and sacks (2.5) across 15 games (seven starts).
Cowart is slated to start opposite Jets Pro Bowl right tackle Quinnen Williams this season, though Williams is currently dealing with a calf injury.
