Former Patriots Defensive Lineman Wants to Sign with Steelers: ‘I Love the Organization’

During an appearance on Good Morning Football on Friday, veteran free agent defensive lineman Lawrence Guy revealed that he would like to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Guy thinks he would be a perfect fit on the defensive line with Cam Heyward and Derrick Harmon. He also loves the defensive culture in Pittsburgh.

“I’m a defensive guy, I need to go on defensive teams,” Guy said. “And I understand there’s a lot of things up in the air, but I would do it, I would go to Pittsburgh. I love the organization. I know I played for the Ravens, I get the rivalry, I love the black and blue game, I was a part of the black and blue game. It is what it is. This team is known for defense.

“There has been stars after stars after stars. You name it, they’ve played it. Right now, with me on there? I know we’re two old people, me and Cam, we all know we’re both old. We kind of look like each other, but he has hair, and I don’t have hair. This is what I’m talking about. When you got a defensive state of mind, you need to go to a defensive team. And this is what they’ve always been known for is defense and dominance.”

Guy, 35, played three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens (2014-2016) and seven seasons with the New England Patriots (2017-2023).

Guy was a seventh-round pick by the Green Bay Packers out of Arizona State in the 2011 NFL Draft. He played with several different teams before finding a home in Baltimore and ultimately New England for seven years.

On Sept. 17, 2024, Guy was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals. His stint did not last long, however, as he was released on Nov. 2.

In his 14-year NFL career, Guy has recorded 507 tackles, 17 sacks, 39 tackles for loss, nine passes defended, six fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.

In 2023 with New England, Guy started in 14 games and played in all 17 games. He recorded 38 tackles, zero sacks and one tackle for loss.

For a seventh-round pick, Guy carved out a nice robust career for himself. He had some solid years with New England and won a Super Bowl in 2018. However, his best days are behind him. He’s 35 and has declined over the last few years.

The Steelers have rebuilt their defensive line this offseason, signing fellow former Patriots lineman Daniel Ekuale and adding Derrick Harmon and Yahya Black in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Steelers might scoop him up if they’re derailed with injuries, but outside of that, it’d be surprising if they had an interest in Guy.
