Ameer Speed hasn’t played in an NFL game in 11 months but now has a chance to make an impact with an AFC playoff contender.
The Houston Texans signed the former New England Patriots cornerback to their practice squad on Monday, as reported by KPRC 2 Houston’s Aaron Wilson.
“#Texans sign former #Patriots #Colts corner Ameer Speed (6-3, 215) to practice squad after successful workout that included four other players,” Wilson posted on X.
The Patriots selected Speed in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft and he played in five games with the team before being released in October that year.
The former college football national champion with Georgia played 73 special teams snaps and 10 more on defense with New England, recording three tackles.
The Indianapolis Colts claimed Speed off waivers shortly after his release and he made six tackles across eight games with the group that season.
Speed played in just two games during the 2024 season with the Chicago Bears, appearing on the field for 16 special teams snaps and three on defense but recorded no stats.
He joins a pair of former Patriots teammates in Houston, after offensive tackle Trent Brown and safety Jalen Mills signed with the Texans in October.
Houston is currently just outside of the AFC playoff picture at 6-5, but have won three in a row and six of their last eight contests since beginning the campaign 0-3.
