Is there still some bad blood between two former head coaches who used to go head-to-head in college football’s biggest rivalry?
In a recent podcast appearance by Urban Meyer, the former Ohio State head coach who duked it out with then-Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh from 2015-2018, believes that a suspension from the NFL brought down on his former rival would not be all that surprising.
“There’s an elephant in the room here that no one’s talking about,” said Urban while on The Triple Option podcast with SI.com’s Karl Rasmussen. “When Jim Tressel was fired by Ohio State and he was given a suspension. Roger Goodell, Commissioner of the National Football League, came out and said that we’re going to honor that suspension. (Tressel) went to the Indianapolis Colts to work in the replay room. The Colts, because of the respect they had for the NCAA and the suspension, suspended Jim Tressel, so he was unable to perform his duties for the first six games of the year.”
This discourse comes after the NCAA recently issued final punishments against the University of Michigan, along with Harbaugh and current head coach Sherrone Moore. Harbaugh was hit with a 10-year “show cause” order.
So here’s the thing, it was absolutely ridiculous for the Colts to put any sort of suspension on Tressel when he no longer worked for Ohio State while doing nothing wrong as a member of the Colts franchise. It would be the same level of ridiculous if the NFL handed down any sort of punishment for Harbaugh as the head coach of the Chargers.
Just no. Meyer failed as a head coach in the NFL and might have some buried resentment towards Harbaugh who has been nothing but successful whether at the collegiate or professional level. If that’s not the case, I’m not sure why he feels the the needs to discuss the matter, nonetheless have that strongly of an opinion to make a case for additional punishment.
Just weird behavior all the way around.
