The Pittsburgh Steelers have returned Ohio State product Trey Sermon to their lineup, re-singing the running back on Wednesday after releasing him on Tuesday.

Sermon was released as part of the team’s final cut down to 53 players on Tuesday. A vested veteran, Sermon did not have to clear waivers and was immediately free to sign with any other team. Instead, he chose to start the season on the Steelers’ practice squad, rejoining the team in time for Wednesday’s practice.

Sermon joined the Steelers this offseason after spending the last two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. He played well for the Steelers this preseason, rushing 10 times for 50 yards, with his 5.0 yards per carry finishing second on the team. Sermon also scored the team’s lone rushing touchdown of the preseason and caught eight passes for 46 yards. Sermon’s 96 yards from scrimmage were third on the team this preseason.

Sermon, 26, joined the Steelers as a free agent this offseason after spending the first four seasons of his NFL career with three different teams. He was a third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers out of Ohio State in 2021, but was released entering his second season.

Sermon was then picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2022 season and cut in September 2023. He then joined the Colts, where he earned the most extensive playing time of his NFL career, gaining 319 yards over 31 games between 2023 and 2024.

With the Steelers, Sermon was slotted as the fourth running back behind Jaylen Warren, Kenneth Gainwell and Kaleb Johnson. The team kept only three players on its active, 53-man roster, meaning that Sermon will likely provide meaningful depth from the practice squad.

Players on the practice squad are free to sign with other teams at any time. The Steelers have a maximum of 17 slots on their practice squad, which is usually filled by a combination of players the team released and cuts from other squads. The team signed 16 players on Wednesday, all of which had previously been with the team in training camp.
