Former No. 3 overall quarterback Trey Lance is expected to hit the open market. Should the Pittsburgh Steelers be interested?
The Pittsburgh Steelers are still deciding who they want their starting quarterback to be for the 2025 season with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields both set to become free agents. Should they be interested in former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance?
The Dallas Cowboys declined Lance’s fifth-year option after acquiring him in a trade last offseason. And while owner Jerry Jones is a fan of Lance, he understands Lance will likely be looking to go somewhere else he has a better chance to play.
“We took a shot a Trey and wanted to do that,” Jones said, via David Moore of The Dallas Morning News. “We think the world of Trey … But us having Dak [Prescott] signed up for the long-term, I think he’s probably going to be looking for something different.”
Lance has all the tools it takes to be a good NFL quarterback. He has the size at 6-foot-4, 226 pounds, arm strength and athleticism. However, he has yet to put it all together at the next level.
The 24-year-old played in just four games in 2024, even after Prescott suffered a season-ending injury in Week 9. Lance served as the backup to veteran quarterback Cooper Rush, who will likely return as the Cowboys’ backup next season.
In those four games, Lance threw for just 266 yards and one interception while also rushing for 41 yards.
It wasn’t the fresh start he was looking for after a few disappointing seasons with the San Francisco 49ers and will likely be the reason most teams remain skeptical of him.
Lance has a career completion percentage of 56.6% with 2.8% of his career passes being intercepted. That should make him cheap to acquire, but it means he will come at a risk.
If Lance agrees to a cheap deal, it wouldn’t hurt for the quarterback-needy Steelers to take a chance on him. But he hasn’t done enough in the first four years of his NFL career to make them commit to him being their starter.
Pittsburgh was among the favorites to trade for Lance last offseason. Maybe the team will look to add him off the open market just one year later.
