Former No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston loves the idea of teaming up with head coach Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot of quarterback uncertainty heading into the offseason with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields set to hit the open market. Depending on how things play out, veteran quarterback Jameis Winston — the No. 1 overall pick in 2015 — would be happy to help fill their void.
“Man, I love Pittsburgh you know because I admire coach Mike Tomlin so much,” Winston said on “Pardon My Take.” “You know the first Super Bowl ring I ever held in my hand was a 2009 Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl ring from Bruce Arians, so that is for sure aligned with my vision, but I don’t know what my Browns fans would say about Pittsburgh. That would be challenging, but it doesn’t matter honestly if that opportunity presents itself, I would love to team up with coach Mike Tomlin.”
Winston, 31, is also set to become a free agent following a one-year stint with the Cleveland Browns, but it wasn’t always pretty to watch. In 12 games, he threw for 2,121 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Tomlin has long preached not turning the football over, so bringing in Winston seems a bit far-fetched for the Steelers. However, he may have a little bit of their attention after he defeated them 24-19 in a Week 12 matchup on Thursday Night Football.
Winston threw for 219 yards and had a rushing touchdown in the win.
Even if the Steelers were to sign Winston for the 2025 season, it would likely be in a backup role. His volatile play his proven to be very unreliable throughout his 10-year NFL career.
Luckily for Winston, Pittsburgh still needs to find its starting and backup quarterbacks. If things don’t go as planned for the Steelers in the coming months, he may just get his wish of playing for the black and gold.
