2014 first overall pick and three-time Pro Bowler Jadeveon Clowney is back on the free agent market.
In a surprise move, the Carolina Panthers announced that they have released Jadeveon Clowney after one year with the team. The 32-year-old had one year remaining on the two-year, $20 million deal he signed last offseason.
By releasing the former No. 1 pick, the Panthers clear just over $7.7 million in cap space. The move also means that the 2016 Second-team All-Pro has hit the free agent market for the sixth straight year.
Clowney spent his first five seasons with the Houston Texans, who took him first overall 11 years ago. He was traded to the Seattle Seahawks ahead of the 2019 season and spent one year there, helping them to a playoff berth and a Wild Card Round victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Jadeveon Clowney signed one-year deals with the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns in 2020 and 2021, respectively. After a stellar first season in Cleveland, Clowney returned on a one-year deal in 2022.
Less than a month before the 2023 season kicked off, Clowney signed a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens. He tied his previous career high with 9.5 sacks, but the Ravens let him go to free agency, where he signed with Carolina.
In 14 games with the Panthers, Clowney recorded 5.5 sacks and four pass breakups.
Clowney never lived up to the hype as a “generational” pass rusher, but he hasn’t been a bust, either. A healthy Clowney is always a threat for double-digit sacks, so there should be plenty of interest in him in free agency.
Super Bowl contenders like the Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers, San Francisco 49ers, Detroit Lions and Buffalo Bills should consider adding Clowney, given their need for extra pass rushing depth.
