Former NFL wide receiver Jordan Shipley suffered a terrible accident on Tuesday, his family announced on Tuesday. Shipley, 40, operated a machine on his ranch near his hometown of Burnet when it caught fire. He suffered severe burns in the accident.
His family issued a statement, which was released by the Texas athletic department, where he played from 2006 through 2009. It provides some details about the accident.
“Jordan was involved in an accident this afternoon near his hometown of Burnet,” a statement from Texas senior associate athletics director John Bianco read. “The machine he was operating on his ranch caught fire, and although he managed to get out, it was not before sustaining severe burns on his body in the process. He was able to get to one of his workers on the ranch who drove him to a local hospital. He was then care-flighted to Austin, where he remains in critical but stable condition.”
After spending four seasons in college, where he became Texas’ single-season leader in yards (1,489) and receptions (116), Shipley entered the NFL draft. The Cincinnati Bengals drafted him with the 84th overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft.
He played 17 games with the Bengals, eight with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and six with the Jacksonville Jaguars. During his short stint, he recorded 79 receptions, 858 yards and four touchdowns.
He retired in 2014 after a short stint with the Jaguars. Shipley’s mother died in 2022.
