The Pittsburgh Steelers might be the most patient team in professional sports. Chuck Noll strolled their sideline for 23 seasons. His successor, Bill Cowher, was in charge for 15 campaigns, and Mike Tomlin followed that up with 19.
Despite the miles-long leash that Steelers head coaches receive, former NFL defensive end and current CBS Sports analyst Leger Douzable pushed back against the thought that coaches should be lining up with resumes in hand to follow Tomlin, who stepped down on Tuesday.
“Everybody always associates Pittsburgh with winning, right? But this isn’t an attractive job,” Douzable said. “When you look at all the jobs that are available — the nine (of them) — it’s probably at the bottom of the list, to be honest with you. Because when you look at their cap and how many contracts they have for older players … what’s your succession plan? They haven’t had one in place since Ben Roethlisberger.”

Douzable added that he felt the Steelers should’ve traded T.J. Watt last offseason. Instead, they signed him to a massive extension that landed them essentially in the same place as last year.
“They needed a succession plan, they need to get more draft capital to move up because Mike Tomlin has been able to elevate his team even when there (are) deficiencies talent-wise,” Douzable said. “They pick in the middle of the draft, so they never get to pick any top quarterbacks. I thought for them to reset and to get a successor, they needed to start to trade off some of those pieces that have been there for years.
“I get loyalty, but when it comes to running a team right now, to me, this is one of the least attractive jobs in the NFL.”
