Former NFL wide receiver and Super Bowl champion Golden Tate publicly admitted to cheating the system to get away with sports betting.

One of the more underrated wide receivers of the 2010s, Golden Tate played a valuable role in the Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl 48 championship-winning season. The one-time Pro Bowler surpassed the 1,000-yard mark three times with the Detroit Lions, helping them to two playoff berths during his tenure.

Tate has stayed mostly out of the spotlight since his last NFL season, spent with the New York Giants in 2020. During an interview on Barstool Sports’ “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast, Tate revealed that he’s largely kept himself busy in sports gambling.

Now that he’s retired, there’s nothing wrong with Golden Tate gambling. The NFL can’t do anything about it, not to mention that sports betting has been legalized in 38 of the 50 U.S. states.

But in his appearance on “Bussin’ With The Boys,” Tate made the mistake of sharing more information than necessary.

Tate explained that he used Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) so that he could use certain sportsbooks that were out of state. Tate said he doesn’t do that anymore, though, since “it’s probably not good to do.”

So Golden Tate admitted to using multiple VPNs that can automatically trigger a ban from specific sportsbooks, and by gambling out of state. All we can say is that it’s a good thing he realized that it wasn’t wise to continue breaking the rules.

Tate retired with 695 receptions for 8,278 yards and 46 touchdowns. He had his best season in 2014, catching 99 passes for 1,331 yards and four touchdowns.

Golden Tate Generated Over $56 Million In Career Earnings

According to Spotrac.com, Tate made $56.421 million during his playing career. Most of that came from the Lions, who gave Tate a five-year deal worth $31 million in 2024 free agency after his Super Bowl triumph.
