Former NFL and XFL quarterback A.J. McCarron has announced his plans to run for lieutenant governor of the state of Alabama. He said in his announcement that he will be working closely with Senator Tommy Tuberville as he runs for governor in 2026.

“Even as a kid, I loved football because there was something special about joining the fight, taking charge, and motivating others to win,” A.J. McCarron, 35, said in a video announcing his run for office. “When Coach Nick Saban recruited me to play quarterback for the University of Alabama, he taught me the principles of being a leader, and together, we won back-to-back national championships.

“And playing in the NFL reinforced the importance of achieving goals bigger than ourselves. My roots run deep in Alabama. And with my football career behind me, Katherine and I are raising our boys here, instilling in them our deep Christian faith and teaching them the fundamental morals that make this state so special. But today, Alabama’s conservative and cultural values are under attack from every direction.

“That’s why Charlie Kirk’s assassination affected so many of us so deeply. His example convinced me to get off of the sidelines, get into the game, and stand tall for our conservative beliefs, so today, I’m announcing my candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Alabama.”

Who is A.J. McCarron?

A.J. McCarron’s wife, who he referenced in his announcement is Katherine Webb-McCarron, is arguably more well-known in Alabama and around the country than he is. She was a semi-finalist in the Miss Georgia USA 2008 pageant and won the Miss Alabama USA pageant in 2012. Then she gained national fame during the 2013 BCS National Championship Game when announcer Brent Musburger called her to the attention of the nation. She would go on to appear in the 2013 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.

McCarron played for the University of Alabama from 2010 to 2013. During his time there, the Crimson Tide went 46-7 and, as he mentioned in his announcement, won two national championships. He went on to be selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL draft. In 2018, he signed as a free agent with the Buffalo Bills, but was traded to the Oakland Raiders before playing a regular season down for the Bills. In 2019, he signed with the Houston Texans, and in 2021 he signed with the Atlanta Falcons. For the 2023 spring season, McCarron played for the St. Louis Battlehawks of the XFL. He then returned to the NFL and the Bengals in 2023, but still played for the Battlehawks in the spring of 2024.

He passed for a total of 1,179 yards and six touchdowns during his nine NFL seasons. In the XFL, McCarron threw for 3,732 yards and 39 touchdowns over two seasons. He earned approximately $16.5 million during his pro football career.
