While the New York Jets got a temporary reprieve of pressure and scrutiny by getting their first win of the against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, they remain a deeply dysfunctional organization, with owner Woody Johnson at the root of those issues.

Prior to the Jets’ Week 8 game against the Bengals, Woody Johnson spoke to the media for the first time since the start of the season and placed the blame of the team’s winless start squarely at the feet of Justin Fields.

Despite Johnson tossing Fields under the bus, the Jets were forced to start the former Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers QB this weekend anyway, and were able to get their first win of the year with him under center.

Prior to the 1 p.m. Sunday matchup, former NFL quarterback Alex Smith — who referenced his experience with bad owners via then-Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder — tore into Woody Johnson for his comments about Fields and everything that’s wrong with the Jets, which also calling him a coward in the process.

“It’s rock bottom, but it’s rock bottom because of this guy,’” Smith said of Johnson. “It is impossible to overcome dysfunctional ownership. This is the definition of it: Woody Johnson. I lived it. How many head coaches and quarterbacks has this guy mowed through, and he drove the bus over this kid [Fields].”

“Maybe the problem is you, Woody. Maybe the problem is you… It starts at the top and trickles down,” Smith continued.

“You have the longest playoff drought in all of the NFL. It starts at the top, and it trickles down. This is cowardly. This is an owner that’s deflecting because his organization is terrible and he drove the bus over a 26-year-old quarterback. Right over the back of him. I don’t think Justin Fields has played great at all this season but you’re telling me his the only problem? You don’t have a win. It’s everywhere.”
