The Kansas City Chiefs are headed to their third straight Super Bowl and their fifth in sixth years. But, it didn’t come without controversy, especially on a crucial fourth-down spot that gave the ball back to Kansas City in the 4th quarter.
Now, former NFL referee and current FOX NFL Rules Analyst Dean Blandino is calling out the referee crew that had the game. He doesn’t know why the ball was spotted short of the line to gain when at least one official had the ball spotted past the line.
First off, here’s the play. the Bills need to get to the Kansas City 40-yard line.

Honestly, it’s really close. He probably does get it by the nose of the football, but marking him short here doesn’t make it the worst spot of all-time or anything.
Still, people love to say things are rigged for the Chiefs, and it caused a huge uproar throughout the NFL world. Now, Dean Blandino is weighing in. Here’s Pro Football Talk with more.
“The spot on the fourth down was close,” Blandino recently told TMZ.com. “When I watched it live, I thought it was a first down. I really did. I thought he made the big line. It was close. You know, when you watch the two officials, one official was coming in from the top. Looked like that official had the spot at the line to gain. The other official had it just short. When you have those situations, really, who does the ball open up to? Does one official defer to the other? Thought they both had fairly decent looks at it. They went with the spot that was short. And once you get it that close it’s gonna be tough to overturn.”
The Chiefs got this close call, and they’ve gotten a few over the years. But, the Bills had plenty of chances to win this game, and didn’t. Leaving the game up to a spot that could’ve went either way by a few inches means you might not have played well enough to win.
