A former NFL executive has been hit with six new charges while in prison.

Amit Patel, who is currently serving time behind bars, is reportedly facing a half-dozen additional charges related to the embezzlement scheme that led to his current situation.

Patel, a former Jacksonville Jaguars employee, is understood to be facing six counts of grand theft in the state of Florida for embezzling north of $22 million from the team. He is serving 6.5 years on a wire fraud charge at a federal penitentiary.

ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio has noted that Patel is likely to spend additional time in jail for stealing from the team, as his previous sentence resulted from something completely different.

“There’s no federal law against theft; it’s a state-law issue. The federal sentence arose from a guilty plea to wire fraud and an illegal monetary transaction,” Florio, a former lawyer, wrote.

He added:

“And so Patel will now face additional jail time for the six counts under Florida law for stealing the money he stole from the Jaguars.”

Amit Patel Had A Pretty Weak Defense For His Wire Fraud Charges

Amit Patel was a financial administrator for the Jaguars and used his position to embezzle over $22 million by using team credit cards to make various purchases.

He cited a gambling addiction as his defense and has sued several top sportsbooks, including FanDuel for what he claims was “actively and intentionally target[ing] and prey[ing] on Plaintiff with incentives, credits, and gifts to create, nurture, expedite, and/or exacerbate his addiction with the only possible outcome that he would ultimately hit rock bottom.”

It doesn’t seem like a very convincing lawsuit, and even if he wins, it won’t get him out of prison.

If he somehow manages to get a judgment against the bookmakers, at least he will have some funds waiting for him whenever he gets out, which looks like it could be a long time from now.
