Former New York Jets first-round pick Zach Wilson took another step closer to being one of the biggest draft busts in team history on Sunday.
After three seasons in New York, Wilson was sent packing in a trade to the Denver Broncos last year. He served as a backup to rookie Bo Nix, but was never able to get playing time since the youngster played much better than many expected.
In the offseason, he took his talents to Miami to serve as the backup to Dolphins starter QB Tua Tagovailoa. Winning the role over rookie, and former Texas star, Quinn Ewers. With Tagovailoa struggling in recent weeks, it looked like Wilson might get a second chance to start in South Beach this season. Well, not so fast.
“The Dolphins are making a change to their QB depth chart for today’s game, as Quinn Ewers will serve as the backup to Tua Tagovailoa for their matchup against the Browns,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport revealed on Sunday afternoon.
Getting demoted to the third-string QB spot for a seventh-rounder who barely got drafted and wasn’t even on the active roster for the first six weeks of the season is a horrible look for Wilson.
The hope was that his time in Denver under offensive guru Sean Payton, then this season in Miami with Mike McDaniel, would go a long way in his development and help turn him into a solid NFL backup, at the very least. However, his demotion in Week 7 is a clear indicator that he has not gotten any better in year five.
The New York Jets have a laundry list of first-round draft busts—players like Kyle Brady, Vernon Gholston, and Blair Thomas. However, at this point, there is no guarantee Wilson is on the Dolphins roster the rest of the season and gets a job in the NFL next year. Moving him quickly up the list of the worst draft busts of all time after being the second overall selection in 2021.
