Aside from DK Metcalf, no Pittsburgh Steelers receiver has more than 250 receiving yards this season. There’s now another wideout available that could possibly help the Aaron Rodgers — or Mason Rudolph — and Mike Tomlin’s offense.
“The Saints and Brandin Cooks have mutually agreed to part ways, according to a source,” NewOrleans.Football reporter Nick Underhill wrote Wednesday on X. “Cooks will be a free agent.”
Cooks will actually head to waivers. Teams will have a 24-hour window to submit a claim on the speedy veteran, who was initially drafted No. 20 overall in 2014. Cooks is in his 12th season as a pro and has spent time with the New Orleans Saints (two stints), New England Patriots, Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys.
Cooks has 19 catches for 165 yards this go-round.
Pat Freiermuth is second on the team with 279 receiving yards on 23 receptions. Calvin Austin III (242) and Jaylen Warren (219) rank third and fourth, respectively. Second-year receiver Roman Wilson, a third-round draft pick in 2024, has 166 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 12 grabs, but hasn’t contributed as the team had hoped when it selected him.
The Steelers signed free agent receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to their practice squad earlier this month, but he hasn’t been elevated to the active roster yet. Valdes-Scantling played with Rodgers with the Green Bay Packers for four seasons, setting career-highs with 690 receiving yards and six touchdowns in 2020.
Rodgers said that Valdes-Scantling is one of his favorite teammates of all time. The receiver said the quarterback had been trying to reunite with him for a few seasons.
