Jason Peters is retiring from the NFL

Former Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Jason Peters has announced he is retiring from the NFL. For us old-timers, Peters was a success story in a down time for the Bills, and despite the way he left the team, we always respected the heck out of him.

Signed as an undrafted free agent tight end by Buffalo in 2004, Peters prepared for that year’s draft as an offensive lineman and his college position. He started the year on the practice squad, but joined the active roster in November, working in on special teams and as an extra blocker.

During the 2005 season, he replaced former first-round pick Mike Williams in the starting lineup at right tackle. In the middle of the 2006 season, he flipped to left tackle and played the rest of his career there. In all, he played 65 games with 55 starts for the Bills while earning two Pro Bowl nods and two second-team All-Pro awards.

Prior to the 2008 season, Peters held out from training camp to get a new contract despite three years left on his deal. Before the 2009 season, Peters again requested a new contract. Instead the Bills traded him to the Eagles, where he signed a six-year, $60 million contract at the top of the market.

Buffalo received the 28th overall pick in the 2009 draft which they used to take center Eric Wood and the 121st overall pick, tight end Shawn Nelson. In 2010 they had a sixth-round pick they used on Danny Batten.

Peters kept playing; 11 seasons with the Eagles, one in Chicago with the Bears, one with the Dallas Cowboys, and one with the Seattle Seahawks. He didn’t sign a contract in 2024 prompting his retirement announcement after the season at the age of 43.

In all, he finishes a Hall of Fame career with 248 games played, two first-team and four second-team All-Pros, nine Pro Bowls, a Super Bowl ring with the Eagles, and he was named to the NFL’s All-Decade team in the 2010s.

He made more than $120 million during his NFL career.
