For those fans hoping that the Seattle Seahawks will put an end to the right guard competition and sign a veteran guard, it is even less likely that is going to happen now.

Former All-Pro offensive guard, Brandon Scherff, has announced his retirement. An article from his Alma mater (the University of Iowa) quoted Scherff saying that he is “retired from playing” football.

Scherff, as one of the most decorated offensive linemen of the last ten years, often came up as a veteran option for the Seahawks. He earned a First-Team All-Pro selection with the Washington Commanders in 2020, as well as five Pro Bowls throughout his time with Washington (2016-2017, 2019-2021). Scherff also spent three seasons (2022-2024) with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

With Scherff retiring, and the recent Will Hernandez to the Arizona Cardinals signing, it seems even more likely that the starting right guard for the Seahawks is currently on their roster. Anthony Bradford seems to be the favorite to land the starting job. Jalen Sundell, who has been in the mix, is getting the majority of his snaps at center now with Olu Oluwatimi out with an injured back. Christian Haynes, who came into training camp as the favorite for the job, has now been running with the second teams at both guard spots as well as center.

Regardless of who Seattle has playing at right guard in week one, hopefully they fare better than last year …
