If you need a peek into how unhinged fans can be, check out what Vernon Davis says one San Francisco 49ers fan said to him.
Not long ago, tight end Vernon Davis was the face of the San Francisco 49ers offense. One of the most dynamic athletes to ever play the tight end position, Davis thrived over his 10-season career with the Niners. From 2009-2013, Davis averaged 59 receptions for 814 receiving yards and nine touchdowns a season and received a pair of Pro Bowl selections.
Davis was understandably a fanbase favorite as a top player on several competitive 49ers teams. During a recent appearance on Julian Edelman’s Games With Names podcast, Davis was asked to share the craziest thing a fan ever said to him. His answer did not disappoint.
Julian Edelman: What was the wildest thing a fan ever said to you?
Vernon Davis: Wildest?
JE: Wildest!
VD: Can I say anything on here?
JE: You can say anything.
VD: Can you f*ck my wife?
JE: Can you f my wife!?!?!?
VD: I looked down and said, ‘No, sir.’ I don’t get involved with that kind of stuff.
JE: Was this in San Fran?
VD: In San Fran. It was my hometown. Yeah, that was crazy. I remember that I vividly remember that. That’s something that will never leave my memory... It was training camp, and then we let the fans come into camp, and I’m coming in. I’m walking down, signing autographs. This guy comes running, ‘Vernon! Vernon! Vernon! Can you f my wife?’

Players have to deal with an onslaught of absurd behavior from fans, and the recent explosion in online gambling and social media’s increased access to players has only heightened those stories. Then again, while there is surely a greater volume of interactions now, it’s hard to imagine many players have had a wilder story than Davis.
