Florio: Expect Steelers to Reunite Aaron Rodgers with Former Teammate

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk expects the Pittsburgh Steelers to reunite quarterback Aaron Rodgers with one of his former teammates.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have finally landed their starting quarterback for the 2025 season, agreeing to terms with four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers on Thursday. Now the Steelers must continue to build around him, and Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk expects one their additions to be one of Rodgers’ former teammates.

“I fully expect that sooner than later, and no later than training camp, the Steelers will trade for Jets receiver Allen Lazard,” Florio said. “Lazard, I think, is a perfect complement because when he’s with Rodgers, he plays really well. When he’s not with Rodgers, he does not play very well. The question becomes, what do the Jets want?”

Pittsburgh has been looking to add another wide receiver since trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys last month. The team hosted Gabe Davis on a free agent visit on Thursday, but he left without a deal due to injury concerns.

Lazard does not have those concerns. He has played in at least 12 games in each of the last four seasons and there’s no arguing his connection with Rodgers.

The two have played together for the past seven seasons with the Green Bay Packers (2018-22) and New York Jets (2023-24). During that span, Lazard has recorded 229 catches for 3,077 yards and 27 touchdowns.

The 29-year-old would also come at a bargain as he just reworked his contract this offseason, reducing his salary to just $2.25 million for the 2025 season.

However, there is a problem. The Steelers are scheduled to face the Jets in Week 1, which could make executing a trade a little more difficult.

Florio thinks New York should take whatever it can get for Lazard, though.

“At the end of the day, if the Jets can get any value out of Lazard, a guy they would have cut if he didn’t take a massive reduction in his pay for this year, anything they get is going to be a win,” Florio continued. “Except in Week 1 when they have to face Aaron Rodgers and Allen Lazard if the trade is made.”

Only time will tell if and when Pittsburgh will land another playmaker to help its new 41-year-old quarterback, but Lazard will certainly be in the mix.
