The New England Patriots have found something special in rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson, possibly making starting veteran Rhamondre Stevenson a possible trade candidate this offseason.
Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon thinks Stevenson could be New England’s most valuable trade chip this offseason.
“The 27-year-old still has his moments, which should be enough to draw some interest,” Gagnon wrote on Friday. “Meanwhile, rookie second-round pick TreVeyon Henderson has emerged as the clear-cut top dog in the New England backfield.”
Stevenson is currently in his fifth season with the Patriots and has recorded 279 rushing yards and three touchdowns in just eight games this season. However, he missed the last three games due to a toe injury, which opened the door for Henderson’s breakout performance. As a result, it seems he could emerge as New England’s No. 1 running back moving forward.
If the Patriots are comfortable with Henderson leading the backfield next season, then New England could consider trading Stevenson, who has three years remaining on his contract after this season.
The downside of letting go of Stevenson is the potential value that running backs can bring in a trade. Since Stevenson isn’t one of the top running backs in the NFL, he likely won’t yield anything significant in return for the Patriots. It might be wiser for New England to hold on to him instead.
