There was speculation that Pittsburgh Steelers fans could chant “Fire Tomlin” if things went sideways against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, and that indeed is the case. With the Steelers losing 23-7 in the third quarter, “Fire Tomlin” chants erupted from the crowd.

Steelers fans also booed during “Renegade”. That’s how bad things are right now.

Fans are fed up with the state of the Steelers, and a majority of them blame Tomlin for the lack of success. The Steelers have not won a playoff game since the 2016 season. That’s almost a decade. That long of a playoff win drought hasn’t happened for the Steelers since pre-1972.

With the lopsided loss to the Bills, the Steelers have lost five of their last seven games.

Tomlin has been one of the best head coaches in the league since joining Pittsburgh in 2007. He holds the NFL record for the most consecutive non-losing seasons to begin a coaching career with 18 and always seems to have his team in contention for the playoffs at the end of each season. However, that record could come to an end if they continue playing the way they have.

That has proven to be true, but there have also been situations that a fresh start has worked out for both sides. Head coach Andy Reid had the Philadelphia Eagles stuck in mediocrity when they moved on from him after the 2012 season. He has since led the Kansas City Chiefs to three Super Bowl wins while the Eagles have won two more themselves.

That isn’t to say history will repeat itself with Tomlin and the Steelers. However, that scenario seems unlikely to play out anyway as Pittsburgh has a long history of sticking with their head coaches until they decide it’s time to hang up their whistles for good. Tomlin is signed through the 2027 season.

Nevertheless, the fanbase is certainly not happy with Tomlin right now. His approval rating is at its lowest since he became the head coach in 2007. There’s never been an audible “Fire Tomlin” chant like on Sunday.
