It was just last offseason when the Buffalo Bills surprisingly traded Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans. He then renegotiated his contract so he could become a free agent at the end of his season. Of course, no one could predict that Diggs, 31, would suffer the first season-ending injury of his NFL career, tearing his ACL in October, just eight games into his Texans career.
Diggs had been on a good pace too, where he was on track to record his seventh consecutive 1,000-yard season. Yet, nothing could change the fact that he was set for unrestricted free agency for the first time in his 10-year NFL career.
Though, not even a serious knee injury could prevent the former All-Pro receiver from receiving a lucrative three-year, $63.5 million contract with the New England Patriots. Still, the four-time Pro Bowl receiver was expected to miss a large chunk of his first season in New England. Now that no longer appears to be the case.
According to Patriots expert Albert Breer, Diggs is now already “trending” toward being able to play for the Patriots’ Week 1 regular season battle against the Las Vegas Raiders.
In other words, Diggs shouldn’t have any trouble emerging as quarterback Drake Maye’s top target in New England this offseason, and he could be in play for what would be his seventh 1,000-yard season.
