Field Gulls
We’re less than three months away from the Seattle Seahawks kicking off the 2026 NFL season with a Super Bowl rematch against the New England Patriots at Lumen Field. In the meantime, Lumen Field is “Seattle Stadium” for the next few weeks as part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Belgium and Egypt played to a 1-1 draw in the first ever World Cup match in Seattle, while the USA and Australia are set for a pivotal group stage showdown in the Emerald City later this Friday afternoon.
For today’s discussion we’re going to veer away from the Seahawks directly. Most of us follow at least another sport pretty closely outside of football. What’s your favorite non-Seahawks sporting event you’ve had the privilege of going to? It can be team sports, individual sports like cycling or boxing or tennis or golf, it doesn’t matter.
As credentialed media through my SB Nation affiliation I’ve had the wonderful experience of going to the Prefontaine Classic track meets over the last two years (and will be back in two weeks for July 4th weekend). Last year was memorable just watching Faith Kipyegon lower her own 1500m world record. Hayward Field in Eugene is a small venue (less than 15,000 normal capacity) but the roar when Kipyegon crossed the line was deafening.
You can sort of see me in media row on the NBC broadcast.
Three months ago, I worked March Madness for SB Nation at Moda Center in Portland. My first ever college basketball game at courtside ended with No. 5 seed Wisconsin suffering a stunning loss to No. 12 seed High Point. There really are few more thrilling things to watch as a neutral than a March Madness basketball upset.
