With the Atlanta Falcons quarterback competition between Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr., fans are wondering which player will be under center when Week 1 rolls around in September. As the Falcons quarterback in Penix is still dealing with recovering from an injury, Tagovailoa would speak about the reality of the battle.

Penix enters his third season with the Falcons, while Tagovailoa starts his journey in Atlanta after six years with the Miami Dolphins, as he spoke Thursday about the battle. Tagovailoa would admit there is competition, but not just the small view between quarterbacks, saying how he sees it “all as competition.”

“I think competition is gonna be there whether it is said or whether it’s not said. This is the NFL,” Tagovailoa said, via Falcons Wire. “You’re either coming out there to compete, or you’re not. I think we’ve all been in this league for some time to know this isn’t something you can walk through. This is something that, whether it’s in the meeting room, we’ve all got to take our job serious and whatever capacity we can do it – I look at it all as competition.”

Falcons’ Tua Tagovailoa has a “head start” in battle

While it’s not certain who will be the Falcons’ starting quarterback by Week 1, it does seem that Tagovailoa has somewhat of a “head start,” according to ESPN’s Marc Raimondi. The reporter would even go as far as to say that Tagovailoa “has been able to do everything” thus far to help his stock within the team.

“Stefanski is on record saying he believes accuracy is the most important trait for a quarterback, something Tagovailoa historically has had in abundance,” Raimondi wrote on Monday. “None of this means Tagovailoa will for sure win the job, especially if Penix impresses in training camp. But Tagovailoa might have something of a head start in this new offense.”

At any rate, it remains to be seen how Atlanta’s quarterback battle progresses through minicamp and especially during training camp. The Falcons’ Week 1 contest is on Sunday, Sept. 13. against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
