Seven years after making him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals appear to have admitted that Kyler Murray is not a franchise quarterback by benching him for Jacoby Brissett. Making matters worse is that Murray is only in Year 2 of a five-year, $230.5 million contract.
Now that he’s been benched, it’s possible the Cardinals are headed for a divorce from Murray, whether it’s by releasing him or trying to trade him in the offseason. While Murray’s potential departure from the Cardinals would likely have him looking for another NFL team to join, some think he should consider other options.
Specifically, an unnamed NFL executive who spoke to The Athletic’s Mike Sando suggested that Murray “can go try baseball.”
Still just 28 years old, Murray does have a history playing the sport. He was even selected ninth overall by the then-Oakland Athletics in the 2018 MLB Draft. The Athletics still own Murray’s rights if he decides to change his mind.

Either way, Murray is sidelined, not playing any sports. From how much money he’s made in the NFL ($170 million), Murray could certainly afford to give baseball a try, but there’s no guarantee he’ll be able to make nearly as much money.
