Former Steeler, Super Bowl winning offensive lineman Willie Colon joined NFL Network and was excited for Aaron Rodgers joining the Steelers.
After the Pittsburgh Steelers officially signed Aaron Rodgers, the acquisition received mixed responses. However, former Steelers offensive guard Willie Colon expressed excitement over the acquisition. He joined NFL Network and explained what the Steelers signed.
Rodgers, who will join the Steelers for mandatory minicamps on Tuesday, was cut by the New York Jets this past offseason. This move left a sour taste in his mouth. Colon hinted that this will be a key piece to his 2025 NFL season.
“You’re getting a 41-year-old quarterback who has a chip on his shoulder,” He told Good Morning Football. “[Rodgers] had comparable stats to [NFL MVP] Josh Allen.”
This comparison has been observed multiple times across media outlets. Both Rodgers and Allen threw for 28 touchdowns and over 3,000 yards in 2024. Rodgers, however, threw nearly double the interceptions.
Still, from a poser standpoint, the identical stat sheet is undeniable. This also gives Steelers fans hope the signing will pay off.
“If I’m the Steelers … I’m treating Aaron Rodgers like a hired mercenary,” Colon continued. He then told NFL Network what mercenary the four-time MVP would be. “Like John Wick.”
Funny enough, Rodgers dressed as John Wick in 2021 for Halloween. Maybe Colon did this intentionally. He also explained why Rodgers is a perfect assassin against opposing defenses this season.
“[The Steelers] don’t need you to reset the culture. [Pittsburgh] needs you to come in, win football games, lay your opponent down, and go home.” The former two-time Super Bowl champion said.
This is precisely what head coach Mike Tomlin needs. Though Pittsburgh needs a long-term solution, Tomlins has always loved a veteran. Rodgers’ resume and pedigree give Pittsburgh the best opportunity to win.
Colon played alongside another future hall-of-fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Together, they won two Super Bowls and went to another–where they lost to Rodgers and Green Bay.
Whether or not Rodgers can help Pittsburgh take a step forward remains to be seen. One thing is for certain: the former offensive lineman approves of what he brings to the Steelers.
