Field Gulls
The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the middle of a big game with the Detroit Lions, and the biggest incident of the entire first half involved former Seattle Seahawks star DK Metcalf… off the field.
Metcalf was seen getting into it with a Lions fan behind the Steelers bench. The CBS broadcast picked up Metcalf punching that fan before walking away.
“He came over because the fan in the stands was holding a ‘For Pittsburgh’ jersey,” CBS reporter Tracy Wolfson said. “He went over and the fan said something to him. Obviously, Metcalf did not like what he said and you saw the swipe there. No Steelers came over to him and mentioned anything. We’ll see if the league takes action, guys.”
The game is ongoing and Metcalf wasn’t interviewed at halftime, so I suppose we’ll get his side of the story afterward regarding what the fan said.
Metcalf has a fairly deep history of altercations on the field, often leading to personal foul penalties throughout his tenure with the Seahawks and the Steelers. He’s only been fined and/or penalized for those incidents over the years. Once that barrier between fan and player is breached and it gets physical, a suspension is 100 percent on the table, and that’s something DK has never experienced.
The officials did not see this altercation, so they can’t take action during the game, so he’s not been ejected. His fate will be in the hands of the NFL very soon, and a suspension in the middle of a playoff chase is about as bad as it gets.
