The NFLPA is currently on the hunt for a new leader after Lloyd Howell Jr. resigned earlier this week following some revelations about some questionable charges on his expense account. Now, a new report claims he used the resources at his disposal to get a bigger parking spot for his Porsche before going out of his way to use that renovation to pay tribute to O.J. Simpson.
It’s been close to 70 years since NFL players banded together to form the Players Association, the labor union that’s tasked with prioritizing their interests while devoting a good chunk of its efforts to negotiating the seven different collective bargaining agreements the league has inked since the first one was ratified in 1968.
The NFLPA is essentially a two-pronged organization on the leadership front. An active player has historically been tasked with serving as the president of the union, and they work in conjunction with an executive director with a seasoned legal or business background that helps them navigate the intricacies of the negotiation process.
Lloyd Howell Jr. stepped into that second role in 2023 after spending nearly 35 years working for the high-profile consulting firm Booz Allen, but his tenure came to an end after spending a little over two years at the helm when he announced his resignation on July 17th.
It appears the revelation stemmed from an investigation that discovered Howell dropped thousands of dollars on visits to strip clubs in Miami and Atlanta before sticking the union with the tab. However, that may not have been his only questionable use of its resources.
It’s impossible to deny O.J. Simpson was a wildly talented football player, as the man who spent 11 seasons in the NFL was the first person to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a single campaign en route to earning Most Valuable Player honors for his standout play in 1973.
With that said, you don’t need to be a diehard football fan to know his achievements on the gridiron ended up being slightly overshadowed by the murder trial that will ultimately be the central pillar of his legacy, and while he may have been officially exonerated, most people don’t make it a point to go out of their way to honor him.
However, according to ESPN, Howell did exactly that after taking over as the head of the NFLPA. The outlet published a report examining the series of events that led to his resignation, which includes an interesting anecdote concerning a request to combine a couple of parking spot to protect his sports car from damage, noting:
Howell ordered the union facilities department to merge two spaces in the parking garage to avoid door dings on his Porsche Cayenne Turbo, the sources said.
**He asked workers to change the number of the two spaces, 10 and 11, to 32, as an homage to the...
