ESPN’s Stephen A Smith is taking some heat amid what has been an interesting week for The Worldwide Leader in Sports.
The network has seen some massive changes over the last few days, having completely cut ties with Shannon Sharpe on Wednesday, according to reports.
Sharpe had been working as an analyst on ‘First Take’ before stepping away due to a rape accusation a few months ago. The company chose to part ways with him after he settled with his accuser earlier this month, despite him vowing he would be back for the NFL preseason.
Gilbert Arenas, who also made appearances alongside Smith, was arrested in Los Angeles today and is facing a trio of federal charges for hosting illegal poker games. The former NBA star was one of eight people arrested in a sting and is said to be looking at five years in prison if convicted.
Wednesday’s incidents follow Marcus Morris’ arrest in Florida on Sunday, with the guard, who last played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, accused of stealing over $250,000 from two big-name casinos in Las Vegas.
Social media quickly pointed to Stephen A Smith as the common denominator in these matters, with the ‘First Take’ host having previously faced criticism for causing ESPN to boot his ex-co-host Max Kellerman.
“Everyone who works with Stephen A. Smith ends up getting arrested or fired😭😭,” Dov Kleiman wrote in a tweet after news of Sharpe’s firing and Arenas’ arrest.
“ESPN looking like the Baltimore ravens😂,” someone wrote in the comments.
