ESPN is reportedly on the verge of acquiring NFL Media, which would then see the network own both NFL Network and NFL RedZone. According to reports, the deal is “inside the five yard line.”
According to a report from The Athletic‘s Andrew Marchand on Wednesday, July 23, ESPN and the NFL are inside the 5-yard line on another ground-breaking deal for ESPN to acquire NFL Media, the arm of the league that focuses on content and runs the NFL Network.
NFL Network was first launched in 2003 following unanimous approval from the league’s 32 owners. NFL RedZone first launched in 2009 and became a game-changing broadcast for the NFL as it changed the way many football fans consume the sport.
Marchand adds in his report that until the deal is officially signed, it can not be considered done, with both sides reportedly working “around the clock” to iron out details. Both ESPN and the NFL declined to comment.
“While a contract between ESPN and the NFL is not signed, the two sides have been closing in on talks that first began four years ago, heated up a little more than a year and half ago and now are the closest they have ever been, with the league even informing its owners they may be needed for a vote on it early next month, as first reported by Sports Business Journal.” [via The Athletic]
It is unclear how much ESPN would be paying in this deal, but The Athletic reports the sum will be “enormous,” and will require a regulatory period for approval that may take about nine months.
The 2025 NFL season is set to kick off in just over a month when the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys at the Linc on Thursday, September 4 at 8:20 p.m. EST.
