The Chicago Bears are just a few months away from kicking off their 2026 NFL season as they look to build on the success of last year. Quarterback Caleb Williams was recently announced as the latest Madden cover athlete in a controversial decision, and the young star will look to continue silencing his doubters heading into next year.
Recently, NFL insider Dan Graziano of ESPN broke down the specific area where he thinks Williams should focus this offseason in order to get better next year.
“What could determine Williams’ (and Johnson’s) long-term success is how Williams improves in the more basic parts of the game (i.e., accuracy). If that happens, the Bears won’t need quite as many of those fourth-quarter hero throws,” noted Graziano, referring to these things as the “boring” parts of his game.
Graziano pointed out that Williams finished 32nd in completion percentage and also 32nd in off-target rate.
He did reference the clear ability that the former Heisman Trophy winner and number one overall pick has to make “wow throws,” including one against the Los Angeles Rams in the playoffs to tie things up. However, Williams’ ability to reach his full potential could come down to whether or not he is able to complete the more basic reads with consistency.
Overall, the Bears are bringing back most of their core roster from a year ago after what has been an eventful offseason, which saw the team trade wide receiver DJ Moore to the Buffalo Bills.
The hope is that Williams will be able to take another step forward in his second year under head coach Ben Johnson. If he does, the sky could be the limit for this Chicago offense, and his spot on the Madden cover would be more than justified.
