ESPN was forced into an emergency lockdown situation this week following an intrusion.
It’s not often that you learn of a broadcasting company being invaded by a wild animal, certainly not The Worldwide Leader in Sports.
However, that was the case this Thursday.
ESPN has had its headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut, since 1979 and probably hasn’t ever experienced a safety breach there – that is, until this Thursday.
According to betting analyst Joe Fortenbaugh, an emergency light had been flashing on the campus for several minutes, and folks had no idea what was going on.
“This yellow emergency light has been flashing all over the campus for the last 15 minutes or so,” Fortenbaugh said on his ESPN Radio show ‘Joe and Q.’
“There’s no sound that comes with it. So when you don’t accompany the sound with a flashing emergency light, no one knows what the hell’s going on,” he added. “So everyone in radio, naturally we’re all low IQ people walking around, ‘What does the yellow light mean? How come there isn’t a sound? What’s going on?”
Fortenbaugh eventually revealed that a black bear was the cause of the lockdown.
“We finally got to the bottom of it: there’s a bear on the campus here of ESPN,” he said. “It’s the bear alert. So everyone on campus stay inside. There’s a black bear on the campus at the current moment.”
While Fortenbaugh’s studio was a ways off from the bear, one of the ESPN producers at ‘Joe and Q’ noted that the company has automatic sliding doors near its cafeteria, which could have presented a big problem.
Fortunately, it doesn’t appear that there were any bear-related incidents at ESPN HQ, as there has been no news, while the network hasn’t released a statement.
