In years past, the Dallas Cowboys have been hesitant to pay their superstar players. The team waited until the last second to give CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott contract extensions, and they opted against re-signing Micah Parsons altogether. Instead, the star edge rusher, who is one of the best players in the NFL, was traded to the Green Bay Packers in a polarizing move.
While Parsons suffered an ACL injury that somewhat validated Dallas’ decision to trade him, the trade return of Kenny Clark and two first-round picks was still viewed as not enough by many. Emmitt Smith, one of the best players in franchise history, had thoughts of his own on how the Parsons trade could affect the Cowboys for years to come, if not longer.
“If we don’t [make the most of the capital acquired in the trade], then I believe the Dallas Cowboys and the family could be losing fans for a lifetime,” Smith said. “Those fans would feel like they’ve been taken advantage of, and no one has really paid attention to them, and that is when you’d see an effect of sales and tickets.”

Fans never like to see their star players depart, so unless Dallas’ acquisitions make them forget about the Parsons trade altogether, Smith thinks Cowboys nation is at risk of losing a large chunk of their fanbase. Clark had a mediocre first year in Dallas. America’s Team also used the first-round pick they acquired from Green Bay to move back to pick 23 and add Malachi Lawrence. With the additional draft capital picked up in the trade back, the Cowboys added Devin Moore and LT Overton. Their 2027 first-rounder is still yet to come.
