The NFL world seems to think it might be time to for Travis Kelce to call it quits. While Kelce just signed a two-year contract extension less than 12 months ago, most of the NFL world seems to believe his time to retire has come.
While Travis Kelce was far from the only member of the Kansas City Chiefs to put forth a pitiful performance in Super Bowl LIX, specific moments from the game suggest that Kelce is not only no longer the All-Pro he once was, but may actually be a net negative for the Chiefs offense.
In a post that’s gone viral on both TikTok and Twitter, Kelce can be seen doing things usually associated with players who are “past it”: slow out of his stance, lack of energy, lazy blocks, flaccid routes (yup, you heard me right, FLACCID ROUTES), dropped balls, etc.
In the loss the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, which saw the Birds dominate the Chiefs by a score of 40-22, Kelce had just four receptions for 39 yards, in addition to two drops. During the 2024 offseason, Kelce signed a two-year contract extension with the Chiefs that will keep him with the team through 2027, although that now seems unlikely.
Statistically, this was the worst season of Kelce’s NFL career, as his 823 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns were both career-lows. He did, however, still haul in 97 catches for 823 yards in 16 regular season games.
If Kelce does decide to retire, he’ll certainly have a multitude of options available for him. Not only does he co-host a successful podcast with his brother and the recent reboot of Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?, but he also recently got into dramatic acting (he starred in the FX series Grotesquerie) and is, of course, dating Taylor Swift.
