Eagles Training Camp Practice Notes: Position battle updates

Observations from the NovaCare Complex.

Today marked the second Philadelphia Eagles training camp practice ahead of the 2025 NFL season. The non-padded session lasted for about 90 minutes. Here’s what I observed at the NovaCare Complex.

EAGLES PRACTICE NOTES

  • JALEN HURTS UPDATE: Yet another day where the ball rarely hit the ground. BGN alumnus Eliot Shorr-Parks has Hurts down for just seven incompletions (86/93) in five media-attended practices this offseason. And though there have been a lot of shorter completions, it’s not like Hurts is entirely avoiding difficult throws. He actually made one of the most impressive practice passes I’ve ever seen from him on Thursday. During 7-on-7, Hurts fit the ball in an extremely tight window to Dallas Goedert with Jeremiah Trotter Jr. trailing close behind the tight end and Sydney Brown having coverage over the top. Hurts also had a nice play-action completion to DeVonta Smith along the left sideline for about 15-20 yards. One of Hurts’ rare incompletions came when Zack Baun ranged over for a pass breakup. Weird to see a defender manage to get a hand on one of his passes. But not shocking that Baun is capable of making that play.
  • EAGLES INJURY UPDATES: Jalen Carter (shoulder) and Kenyon Green (knee) remain out. Jihaad Campbell (shoulder) and Cam Jurgens (back) were listed as limited again. Nakobe Dean is still on the active/PUP list.
  • POSITION BATTLE UPDATE — SAFETY: Cooper DeJean was the starting safety in the Eagles’ base defense again. Rookie Andrew Mukuba was first up at safety in nickel defense with DeJean shifting down to the slot. Mukuba and Sydney Brown continue to split first-team reps. Andre’ Sam also saw some limited first-team action, just like he did in the spring.
  • POSITION BATTLE UPDATE — CORNERBACK: Whereas Kelee Ringo took the starting reps on Wednesday, Adoree’ Jackson was first up as the Eagles’ first-team right cornerback on Thursday. Ringo replaced Jackson with the starters in the second 11-on-11 series while the latter played left cornerback with the second-team defense.
  • Will Quinyon Mitchell shadow cornerbacks in 2025? Here’s what Vic Fangio had to say on that topic Thursday morning:

Q. What is the reason behind CB Quinyon Mitchell working on the other side in the spring and summer?

Vic Fangio: Well, if we ever get to the point where we want to match him on his particular receiver, he’s got to know how to play both sides if we want to play him at left or versus right, so we’ll figure that out on a weekly basis.

Q. Do you view the two as different? There’s a thought I guess that the left corner gets a little bit more action because the right-handed quarterback, is that true?

Vic Fangio: That’s kind of proven to not be true over the years.

**Q. When it comes to cornerbacks traveling with the receiver, do you have any kind of philosophy on when...
