Eagles Prevent Three-Peat, Rout Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX
Steelers Now Steelers Now

The Philadelphia Eagles routed the Kansas City Chiefs, 40-22, in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. It marks the second Super Bowl title in seven years for the Eagles, while the Chiefs came up short from becoming the first team in the modern era to three-peat.

Kansas City also failed to join the Pittsburgh Steelers (1974-1979) as the only team in NFL history to win four Super Bowls in a six-year span.

The Eagles swarming defensive line was the story of the game, as the unit recorded a whopping six sacks on Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Josh Sweat had a banner day, recording six tackles (2 solos), 2.5 sacks, two tackles for loss and three quarterback hits. Milton Williams had two sacks and a force fumble and recovery.

The Eagles didn’t blitz all game. The defensive line just absolutely dominated up front.

In the first half, the Eagles defense allowed 23 total yards, one first down, zero points, 1.2 yards per play and recorded two interceptions, one of which was a pick-six by rookie slot corner Cooper DeJean.

Linebacker Zach Baun also picked off Mahomes, setting up a Jalen Hurts 12-yard touchdown pass to A.j. Brown to give the Eagles a commanding 24-0 lead at halftime.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had zero receptions in the first half, marking the first time that has happened in his career during the playoffs.

How special for Zack Baun. He spent 4 years in this very stadium as a special teamer who couldn't find his place in Saints D.

A year later, he's an All-Pro forcing weekly turnovers, including this athletic INT to set up yet another Eagles TD.pic.twitter.com/IDuVmmjunV

The Chiefs recorded one first down on their opening drive of the second half, but back-to-back sacks put the possession to a halt. The Eagles then went on a 12-play, 69-yard drive that concluded with a 29-yard field goal by Jake Elliott to extend Philadelphia’s lead to 27-0. The drive drained 6:42 off the clock.

On the following possession, Eagles cornerback Avonte Maddox broke up Mahomes’ pass intended for DeAndre Hopkins. Hurts then called game by throwing a dime to DeVonta Smith for a 46-yard touchdown to put the game away at 34-0.

Late in the third quarter, Mahomes connected to Xavier Worthy for a 24-yard touchdown to finally get Kansas City on the scoreboard. The Eagles answered with a 48-yard field goal by Elliott on the ensuing possession.

Milton Williams then called game with a strip sack and recovery on Mahomes.

Milton Williams with the strip sack! Philly defense is playing lights out. #FlyEaglesFly
