The Eagles are currently listed as slight underdogs against the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX and have some work to do if they want to stop Patrick Mahomes from winning his fourth championship ring. However, there’s another quarterback who’s also standing in their way courtesy of the Kirk Cousins Curse.

The 2015 season marked the first year Kirk Cousins served as the primary starting quarterback for the team now known as the Washington Commanders, and all of the wins he racked up during the 9-7 campaign that was good enough to win the NFC East came against teams who failed to make the playoffs.

You could argue that technically marked the start of the Kirk Cousins Curse, but it really began the following season.

Washington missed the playoffs by going 8-7-1 during a year where they did get a win over a Packers team that finished at 10-6. That was good enough to make the postseason, but Green Bay came up short in its quest for a Super Bowl berth after getting blown out by the Falcons in the NFC Championship in a lopsided 44-21 affair.

That marked the start of a run where no team that lost to a squad led by Cousins (who joined the Vikings in 2018) during the regular season was able to make it to the Super Bowl as the list of contenders that fell victim to the trend became increasingly hard to ignore:

  • 2016: Giants lose in Wild Card Round, Packers lose in NFC Championship
  • 2017: Rams lose in Wild Card Round
  • 2018: Eagles lose in Divisional Round
  • 2019: Eagles lose in Wild Card Round
  • 2020: Bears lose in Wild Card Round, Packers lose in NFC Championship
  • 2021: Steelers lose in Wild Card Round, Packers lose in Divisional Round
  • 2022: Dolphins lose in Wild Card Round, Giants and Bills lose in Divisional Round

The 49ers were able to snap that curse after making it to the Super Bowl last year only to lose to the Chiefs, but there’s still firmly a curse intact when you consider that simply means no team that’s lost to Cousins has been able to secure the Lombardi Trophy.

That brings us to Super Bowl LIX, which (as you likely know) will feature the Chiefs and the Eagles. Kansas City earned a 22-17 victory over Cousins and the Falcons in Week 3, but Philadelphia ended up on the wrong side of a 22-21 result in their game against Atlanta the previous week.

The Eagles will have the chance to become the first team to overcome the curse, but history certainly isn’t on their side.
