The New York Giants’ 33-32 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday was one of the most devastating defeats in franchise history and certainly the low point of the Brian Daboll era.
Not only did they blow a 26-8 lead with 5:13 remaining in the game, but they also allowed Denver to score all 33 of their points in the fourth quarter. When a team has a collapse of this magnitude, every player needs to be held accountable for their part in the loss. But the head coach will always shoulder the bulk of the blame, and that’s why the spotlight falls squarely on Brian Daboll.
The 50-year-old coach came into this year on the hot seat after the Giants set a franchise record for losses in a season with 14 in 2024. Now at 2-5, New York faces a must-win game Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Not only is the season teetering, but Daboll’s tenure with New York will weigh heavily on Sunday’s outcome.
Daboll was already on thin ice with a 20-37-1 record and back-to-back double-digit loss seasons on his resume. Losing to the Eagles on Sunday would drop New York to 2-6 and almost assure another double-digit losing season.
It would be a hard sell to the fan base and to people in the organization to bring back a coach with three consecutive seasons of at least 10 losses. Although the organization likes what he’s done with Jaxson Dart and doesn’t want to disrupt the rookie quarterback’s development, at some point, they must decide whether they have the right man in charge.
In addition, a loss to Philly would make New York 1-3 against the NFC East this season and guarantee they would once again finish without a winning record in the division. Daboll has struggled mightily against the division with a 5-16-1 record, including the playoffs.
For a team to have sustained success in the NFL, it must start by having a winning record within the division. This is something he hasn’t been able to do in three and a half seasons, and another loss would make it less likely that the pattern will change. If a head coach continues to lose to divisional opponents, a coaching change must happen, and this change will likely come at season’s end.
Despite the bleak outlook for Daboll with another loss, a win would provide some optimism. A win Sunday in the City of Brotherly Love would give Big Blue its first season sweep over the Eagles since 2007. It would also give them their first win in Philly since 2013.
If the Giants beat the Eagles, they would improve to 2-2 against NFC East opponents, and with home games remaining against the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders, give them a chance at a winning record in the division. Having a winning...
